Due to a serious traffic accident near Brecht (in the Antwerp province), the E19 motorway in the direction of the Netherlands is completely closed near Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor, the Federal Police announced. The accident happened in the tail of a traffic jam after a chain collision that happened earlier in the day, near Loenhout.
Since noon, there have been major traffic problems on the E19 motorway from Antwerp to Breda, following a chain collision near Loenhout involving about a dozen cars. Two people sustained minor injuries. Due to the accident, the left and right lanes were blocked and only the breakdown lane was available, resulting in a traffic jam of about four kilometres.
At the time of the accident, there was a lot of dense fog, which is why the Flemish Traffic Centre is asking motorists to drive carefully and adjust their driving style. While the cleanup of the chain collision took some time, the Flemish Traffic Centre reported around 14:15 that the accident had been dealt with and the road cleared.
However, a serious accident happened in the tail of that traffic jam a bit later when a car drove into a truck there. The driver of the car was trapped and had to be freed by the fire brigade before being taken to hospital in critical condition.
Due to this accident, the E19 motorway is completely blocked. All traffic must leave the motorway via exit 4 Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor. A diversion is planned until exit 3 Brecht, where drivers can re-enter the motorway. Long-distance traffic is advised to detour via the A12 to Bergen-op-Zoom.
