Unrelated to the Paris attacks, several raids and arrests took place on Sunday 27 December and Monday 28 December in Brussels, the Flemish region and in the Liege surroundings. Six people were taken in for questioning, out of whom two are now held under arrest, the police authorities in Belgium announced on Tuesday morning.
The recent investigations have shed some light on the current threats of attacks which appear to have targeted several popular spots in Brussels during the New Year celebrations.
According to the a spokesperson at the Federal Police office, “the first person is believed to be the mastermind of these terrorist attack plans. He is under arrest for participation in a terrorist group where he has taken on a leadership role and actively tried to recruit other people with the aim of committing terrorist attacks. The second person currently under arrest is also believed to have had an active role in planning the attacks.”
The four other people who were initially taken in for questioning have been released.
