The perpetrator of the stabbing attack in the Schuman metro station in Brussels European Quarter on Monday evening is under investigation for attempted murder and will be subject to a psychiatric examination, announced Brussels Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday.
Around 17:45 on Monday evening, a man in a metro carriage at Schuman metro stop attacked several people with a knife. Three people were injured, one of them seriously. While the Public Prosecutor previously communicated that all three victims had since been able to leave hospital, that now turns out to be incorrect as one victim is still in hospital.
"The suspect, a man aged 30, was arrested by police," Willemien Baert, a spokesperson for the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office, said in a press release. "His motive is not yet clear but there is currently no reason to assume he was an extremist or terrorist. The perpetrator is not known to the security services."

After his arrest – of which there are numerous images and videos circulating on social media – the suspect was interrogated on Monday night and will be brought before the investigating judge for attempted murder on Tuesday.
Following the attack, bystanders speculated from the man's behaviour that he was suffering from psychological problems. The Public Prosecutor has also asked for a psychiatric examination of the man.
Update: This article was updated to include the latest information from the Brussels Prosecutor's Office, which stated that not all victims have been released from hospital, as one severely injured man is still admitted.
