Proximus, one of Belgium's largest telecommunications companies, has announced that it will provide free calls and text messages from Belgium to Turkey and Syria in response to the recent earthquakes.
On Monday, a 7.8- magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and western Syria. The death toll has already risen to over 11,200 counting both countries. More than 8,500 people were reported dead in Turkey and 2,662 bodies have already been pulled from the rubble in Syria.
Various countries, including Belgium, have sent aid. Meanwhile, Proximus decided to make mobile and fixed-line calls and text messages from Belgium to Turkey and Syria free of charge for all its customers during the month of February, noting that it "wants to ensure communication between people in Belgium and their family and friends in Turkey and Syria."

"Touched by the terrible images of the disaster, management has decided to respond and support all customers who have friends and family in either country," a press release from the company read.
The measure will apply to the group's three brands: Proximus, Scarlet and Mobile Vikings. "In such a situation, nothing is more important than being able to check how your loved ones are doing."
