Socialist trade union SETCa blocked the main entrance to the building of Dutch bank ING on Avenue Marnix in Brussels on Tuesday morning in protest of the dismissal of its main delegate, Pascal Breyer.
Around a hundred activists descended on the bank building on Tuesday morning, holding banners which read “Shame on you, mister Adams” in reference to the CEO of ING Belgium, Peter Adams.
The union accuses Adams of sidelining anyone who might oppose new social measures at the company. The decision to dismiss the main representative of their union is incomprehensible, SETCa says.
“They want to kick him out because, as a union representative, he sent an information letter which was also sent to people outside the bank. It was also sent to the delegates of the ‘bank’s commission’ of the SETCa, for example. The newsletter simply contained basic information, but nothing confidential. It is scandalous,” said Pierre Merveille, secretary of SETCa.

The union says that it now intends to prove the company intends to dismiss the union’s main representative as a result of his union activity. Under Belgian law, this would constitute unjust dismissal. The union states that it is planning further protest action against the decision.
