The body of the 25-year-old woman who fell into the Senne river in Zemst, in Flemish Brabant, on the night of 28 to 29 January, has been found, the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday.
Despite several search operations involving police, firefighters and divers, as well as a dummy to replicate the potential path taken by the victim in the water, her body was found on Thursday in a canal in Duffel, in the province of Antwerp.
The 25-year-old is believed to have drifted to the Zennegat lock in Mechelen, before ending up in another arm of the tributary and then being dragged by tides to the Nèthe Canal in the province of Antwerp.
The accident has raised widespread criticism of the design of the cycle path in which the woman fell to her eventual death.
