Mourad Laachraoui, taekwondo champion: "Show others that it’s possible"

The brother of one of the suicide bombers in Brussels told the press that most Muslims in Brussels want an Islam of peace. After becoming European champion in taekwondo (under 54 kg) last week, Mourad Laachraoui was interviewed on Tuesday (24 May) by Le Soir and Sudpresse.

"I am myself, European champion in taekwondo, a simple man, I’m studying and doing everything to live a normal life without problems," he said.

During his preparation for the European championship Mourad wanted to "go for it and show others that it’s possible to continue my life despite what had happened."

Talking about his brother he said: "Nobody on earth wants someone to do what he did, the worst possible thing, and this someone was my brother. I don’t know what happened and I’ll probably never know."

He concludes that he wants "an Islam of peace, as most Muslims who live in Belgium and who want to thrive”.
