The Binche Carnival is one of the oldest and most representative traditions of Wallonia. In 2008 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The 2023 celebration drew over 100,000 spectators as Belgium's carnival season gets underway.
A record number of visitors attended this year with participants arriving from France, Spain, Great Britain and Lithuania.
"The Binche Carnival 2023 was truly exceptional in more ways than one... The high visitor numbers attest to the general enthusiasm for reliving the carnival after two years of the pandemic," organisers said.
