A lifeless body was discovered on Friday morning in the Meuse river in the city of Visé in the province of Liège, local firefighters announced. The body is believed to be of a young child reported missing to police.
Emergency rescue teams arrived on the scene after the body was spotted near the Lixhe Dam bridge shortly before 09:00. Operations soon identified the four-year-old child who had been reported missing alongside its mother since Thursday evening.
The child’s body was retrieved from the water by divers from the Liège fire brigade.

As of noon, the mother was still reported to be missing. The Liège public prosecutor’s office has sent police officers to the scene and an official investigation has been launched.
