Finding and keeping the right staff is a critical challenge for three out of four companies in Belgium, according to a study by HR services provider Acerta and KU Leuven which was published on Monday.
According to the survey of 270 managers, "runaway inflation, the impending recession and automatic pay indexation are major challenges for companies." However, for the majority of Belgian companies, the biggest concern at the moment is finding and keeping the right people.
Over 9 in 10 companies also say they provide feedback to candidates after a job interview – even if they did not get the job. When this is the case, it is almost always personalised feedback (92.2%) for successful candidates; significantly less so for unsuccessful candidates (58.9%).
"A positive experience triggers a positive attitude on the part of the candidate afterwards. In this respect, there is a growing awareness of the importance of good feedback that pays off for both parties," pointed out Rein De Cooman, Professor at KU Leuven.
Finally, 62% of companies consider it a major challenge to develop the skills in their employees that will be needed in the future.

As opposed to the hiring and laying off scenario recently observed in many American tech giants, "Belgian companies prefer to focus on the sustainable employability of workers," said Benoît Caufriez, Director of Acerta Consult. "In this context, the willingness to learn and the ability to adapt are skills that are gaining in importance."
