UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Iraq for his first visit in six years, with the aim of supporting the efforts towards peace in the war-torn country, his spokesperson announced in New York on Tuesday.
"The Secretary General is there to reaffirm the UN's commitment to support Iraq's efforts to move towards peace, human rights and sustainable development for all Iraqis," Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement.
Antonio Guterres, who landed in Baghdad on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Mohamed Chia al-Soudani, and with representatives of groups defending the rights of women and young people.
On Thursday, he will visit a camp for internally displaced persons in the north of the country before travelling to Erbil to meet representatives of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
He will then leave for Qatar to attend a summit of Least Developed Countries.
The Secretary-General's last visit to Iraq was in the spring of 2017.
