Belgium's Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne has confirmed that 271 inmates will be transferred to a new prison in Dendermonde, East Flanders on Saturday, resulting in the largest-ever transfer of prisoners in Belgian history.

The inmates will move from the old prison in Dendermonde to the newer more "humane" detention centre. As part of the Belgian Government's aim to tackle overcrowded jails, they have set up this new prison to allow "inmates to serve their sentences in much better conditions of supervision," according to the Justice Minister.

To ensure that the record transfer runs smoothly, four cell vans will make 34 round trips with the inmates under strict police escort.

Moreover, a total of 200 prison staff, 232 police officers, a helicopter, a water cannon, an armoured vehicle, a patrol boat, a drone, eight police horses, eight anti-drug dogs and four patrol dogs have also all been deployed.
