Car sales had an excellent year in Belgium during 2016. New car registrations increased by 7.7% to 539,519 vehicles. This was published yesterday (Monday) by the sector's federation, Febiac (the sector's advisory and research federation).
Only 2011 and 2010 topped this figure.
In December, new car registrations increased to 33,523 (an increase of 2.4%), bringing the annual total to 539,519, compared to 501,066 in 2015.
Renault remains Belgium's most popular brand, with 55,871 cars sold in 2016 (up by 11.7%), amounting to a market share of 10.4%.
Volkswagen comes second with 53,021 cars (up by 11%) whilst BMW completes the podium having a respectable third place with 40,227 cars (up by 8%).
Opel and Peugeot are respectively the next brands to take the chequered flag.
The number of new utility vehicles also increased in 2016, except for heavy-duty vehicles of less than 16 tonnes. Lastly, sales of motorcycles increased by 11.3% over the year to 25,507 units.
