Three Belgian breweries, De Struise Brouwers (Oostvleteren), 3 Fonteinen (Beersel) and Cantillon (Anderlecht), feature amongst the 100 breweries most enjoyed by consumers in 2016, per the American beers rating site, known as Ratebeer. De Struise Brouwers is the best brewery in the Low Countries.
Five of their beers are placed in the top 100 of the world's best beers in 2016, their Cuvée Delphine being the highest rated Belgian beer.
The best brewery in the world is Hill Farmstead, located in Vermont (in the north-east of the United States).
The discovery of the year, amongst the breweries of the four corners of the world, is Bokkereyder - a start-up gueuse beer manufacturer from Limburg. This title confirms the new found love on the other side of the Atlantic with bitter sweet beers.
Just like last year, the bar located in Eizeringen (Flemish Brabant), In Het Verzekering Tegen de Grote Dorst, known for its exclusive Sunday opening, was designated best café in the world.
The rating site RateBeer has published its annual ratings since 2002. The ratings are awarded by all registered Internet users accessing the site.
Some 470,000 beers from more than 26,000 breweries are registered in this way. On this site, Westvleteren 12 received first place in the ratings on several occasions, ensuring that the Belgian Trappist beer has maintained a reputation, which has barely declined in volume to this day.
In the three most recent years for the ratings, two beers from 3 Fonteinen scooped first place: Hommage (2013 and 2014) and Framboos (2015).
