A man has been taken to hospital after becoming trapped in the shutters of one of the entrances to the Porte de Namur Metro station in Brussels on Sunday morning, STIB announced. Authorities are puzzled as to how the situation came about.

At around 5:00 in the morning, as the metro station opened, a man was reported to have become trapped in the shutters of one of the entrances.

“We don’t really know what happened,” the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company said.

The entrance to the station was blocked for 30 minutes, as the Brussels Fire Brigade arrived on the scene. The man was then taken to the hospital, STIB said.

“There is nothing broken but there is a possibility of internal injuries,” added Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade.

Following the incident, emergency services stated that they are very surprised by the situation and still do not understand how it happened.

The doors were opened remotely by electronic means, so the system was momentarily disrupted while the electricity was cut off in order to free the person manually, the spokesperson said.
