Union Saint-Gilloise capped off a historic week on Sunday with a 2-1 win over KV Mechelen in the league. The result puts them within touching distance of league leaders Genk.
Having qualified for the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday, Union had another fixture three days later against Flemish side KV Mechelen. The club from the capital knew that a win would see them get even closer to the top spot in the league.
Indeed, league leaders Genk were beaten by Union last weekend and drew against Cercle Brugge on Friday, which means that Union Saint-Gilloise could be three points off them on Sunday.
