10 April, Easter Monday, is a public holiday in Belgium. Traditionally, Belgians enjoy a day off from work on the day after Easter Sunday, typically spending time with their families. As such, this Monday is a mandatory bank holiday for many employees across Belgium.
Many Belgian businesses will be entirely shuttered today and locals will notice that major city centres are particularly quiet. This Easter Monday is a perfect opportunity to visit the countryside or local parts, but shopping outings will be more difficult.
As is usual in Belgium on public holidays, banks will remain closed today. Likewise, municipal administration buildings. Most post offices will also be closed but some postal points within local convenience stores may still be accessible.
Pharmacies across the country will also be closed. Nevertheless, at least one pharmacy in the local area will be open and on duty. The nearest on-duty pharmacy can be found on the official Belgian pharmacies website.
The vast majority of supermarkets across the country will remain closed today. Only stores that remain open on Sundays and public holidays are likely to be open. Locations of Aldi, Lidl, Cora, Makro, Okay, and Colruyt are all closed today.
Some locations of Delhaize and Carrefour will work today, following Sunday hours. A full list of open Delhaize stores can be found here, and here for Carrefour. A limited number of Intermarché locations will also be open but under reduced opening hours. Some Spar locations are also open, and most Match stores will also be open.
In terms of public transport, there will be no significant impact to the services offered by Brussels’ STIB network. The adapted school holidays timetable will remain in effect throughout the day. Flemish De Lijn and Walloon TEC bus and tram services will also run on an adjusted timetable.
SNCB trains across Belgium are in operation, but on the weekend timetable. Some routes may be closed due to planned engineering work. Services will be disrupted on the Ottignies-Brussels line and trains from Namur to Brussels will be diverted via Leuven.
