At the border of Avenue Jean de la Hoese and Avenue du Karreveld, the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean has created a brand new green relaxation zone that includes a playground and a so-called "active bench."
The unused trianglar piece of concrete at the entrance to Avenue Jean de la Hoese was recently transformed into a green relaxation area with a children's playground that features, among other things, a slide and a climbing wall. There is now an "active bench" that invites seniors and adults with information sheets to perform simple sports exercises.
"This project responds perfectly to the lack of greenery and leisure facilities in Molenbeek where population density is high and there is a lack of private gardens," Molenbeek city councillor for public works Jef Van Damme announced.

"The relaxation zone is a fine example of a truly participatory project," he said. "In May 2022, Mayor Catherine Moureaux and I organised a neighbourhood survey to find out how best to redesign the entrance. The main need turned out to be a relaxation area tailored to children and senior citizens."
Van Damme said the project is also part of a broader plan to create more recreational opportunities in Molenbeek's public spaces. "The renovation and expansion of our playgrounds remains a top priority in this regard."
