As of today, a second phase of renovation works will start in the Leonard tunnel in Tervuren on the outskirts of Brussels. Preparatory works were already carried out between January and May 2022. The works will mostly take place in the evening and at weekends.
The Leonard tunnel passes underneath the Léonard crossroad, which connects the E411 and the Brussels Ring road (R0) in Tervuren. The tunnel consists of four tubes, one for each direction of traffic on each highway.
Since its construction in the 1960s and 1970s, the condition of the tunnel has degraded significantly. The concrete is cracking in many places due to de-icing salts, exhaust fumes, and groundwater infiltration. The tunnel requires a complete overhaul.
The renovation will firstly see the walls and ceilings of the tunnel repaired or replaced. The roof plate of the tunnel of the Brussels Ring will get a special treatment to place the steel in the reinforced concrete under a limited low voltage, which electrochemically ensures that the steel does not rust further.
