The Flemish Environment Agency, Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij, calls on the Flemish population to avoid burning wood in stoves or fireplaces on Thursday, because of poor air quality. When burning wood, substances that are harmful to health, such as fine particles, dioxins and HAP (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are released.
“Should people still burn wood, it is preferable they only use dry and untreated wood,” stipulates the Flemish agency.
The information threshold for fine particles fixed at 50 µg/m³, is exceeded in the country’s three regions, had announced Wednesday morning the Interregional Cell for Environment (Celine).
