Security officers at London’s Heathrow Airport will strike for eight days in May as part of a dispute over higher wages, the Unite union announced.

Strikes are planned on 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 25, 26 and 27 May. These will “inevitably cause disruptions and delays” at a time when many people are expected to travel to the UK for King Charles’ coronation (on 6 May).

The dispute involves about 1,400 security officers. “We are left with a chief executive who thinks it is acceptable to increase revenue while refusing his own employees a decent pay rise,” said Sharon Graham, Unite’s general secretary.

A 10-day strike had already been held by security staff at Heathrow around Easter. Airline British Airways then had to cancel around 30 flights each day.
