Some 74% of Belgians believe the European Union should lead the world in the pursuit of animal-free science and innovation, animal rights organisation GAIA said on Sunday based on a survey that sampled 1,084 Belgians among other nationals.
The publication precedes World Animal Day, which takes place on Monday. The global survey was commissioned by Eurogroup for Animals, an organisation that groups more than 70 animal rights organisations and to which GAIA belongs. Other countries included Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark and Norway.
It emerges from the responses of Belgian citizens that 77% agree that more needs to be done to completely replace animal testing in scientific research and education, as well as in the field of toxicological testing.

74% think the EU should lead the world in the pursuit of animal-free science and innovation, and 71% are “very concerned” about the use of animals in scientific research, education and chemical or drug testing.
According to European data put forward by GAIA, which dates back to 2020, the total number of animals used in experiments then amounted to 8,753,304, with 437,275 in Belgium alone. In 2021, 477,675 experiments using animals were carried out in Belgium.
