A €3 million investment will see beverages brewed by Gembloux.BEER actually produced on the Gembloux Agro-Bio-Tech. The beer has previously been brewed in Charleroi – over 20km away.

The company opened its new facilities on Thursday after renovating a former research laboratory on the university campus.

Luc Minne, managing director of Gembloux.BEER, forecast that the move would bring turnover of €1 million and allow for production to rise to 7,000 hectolitres within three years.

Founded in 2018, the company received €1.3 million backing from an association of investors: the Agro Gembloux Invest cooperative, Gesval, the ULiège valorisation company, Noshaq, Namur Invest, the Gembloux Agro-Bio-Tech student association, the Gembloux Agro-Bio-Tech engineers association as well as three professors and two members of management.

“Gembloux.BEER will continue producing the Gembloux Abbey beer, created in 1980 by students, as well as six other beers that have since been created. These were brewed in Charleroi from 2019 to 2022 whilst works were being completed,” Minne explained.

A taproom where beers can be enjoyed on-site will open doors on Friday. Now located on campus, Gembloux.BEER will host students for final-year work and participate in various research programmes in psychology, microbiology and around alcoholism.
