Nearly one hundred construction sites across Belgium are open to the public today as part of the Open Construction Day.
The aim of this day is to show “how innovative construction is and how it can offer sustainable solutions for housing, mobility and the climate, among others,” the event organiser Embuild federation said.
The construction of a new courthouse in Namur, the renovation of the Vandeuren district in Ixelles or the new housing projects in the Ardennes village of Lavacherie are some of the sites that can be visited physically or virtually.
The full list of the building sites is available on the event’s website.
In a statement on Sunday, the organiser called on public authorities to increase financial investment in the country’s infrastructure to make up for disinvestment in recent years.
Major works are needed on roads and cycle paths, but also on the railway network, public facilities, schools and hospitals, Embuild said.
The federation would like public investment to reach 4% of GDP by 2029, compared to the current 2.7%.
The previous edition of the Open Building Day attracted 54,000 visitors in person and 141,000 online.
