The success rate of the July medicine and dentistry entrance exam in the Walloon-Brussels Federation reached 20.26%, announced Monday the Academy for Research and Higher education (ARES). In total, 684 candidates were proclaimed as successful by the jury. The candidates were essentially females this year: more than two thirds (67.71%). This trend had already been observed for the September 2017 examination, as well as in the Flemish Community, notes ARES.
The aspiring students were to pass a test consisting of 120 multiple-choice questions covering eight branches: four scientific subjects (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics) and four about communication and critical analysis of information (reasoning, communication, ethics, empathy).
In total, 3,376 young people wrote the examination, whereas 3,615 were registered. Among those who wrote the exam, 852 were non-residents. Eighty-six obtained the necessary average score. “Their number being inferior to 30% successful (12.28% in medicine and 16.33% in dentistry), it was not necessary to proceed to the planned ranking in order to respect the quota determined by the two sectors’ legislation, so that all are granted their achievement certificate,’’ specifies ARES.
The Academy observes that the success rate is globally inferior in the scientific subjects, the physics exam being the most difficult, “even if the results in this subject in particular are in progress, when compared to last year.’’
The candidates who failed will be given a second chance on 5 September. The registration is open from 18 July to Sunday 5 August at 11:59 pm.
