A Boeing 747-400 belonging to the Cargolux airline lost part of its landing gear as it touched down on the tarmac on Sunday evening at Luxembourg airport.

This was reported on Monday on the website of Le Quotidien daily in Luxembourg.

The runway was initially closed, before reopening at around 1 a.m., the airport said on its Twitter account.

The incident was captured by an aircraft “spotter” who posted his video on Twitter on Sunday evening. It shows the plane attempting to land on the tarmac and part of the landing gear ripping off at the same time. A fire truck parked nearby immediately drove to the runway.

“The plane was unable to retract its landing gear on take-off from Luxembourg. As a result, it was forced to safely dump fuel in order to return to land at the airport,” Cargolux Airlines said in a statement posted on Facebook. “On its landing roll, its right body landing gear detached from the aircraft. The aircraft, however, came to a controlled stop and was attended to by the emergency services.”

"No persons on board nor on the ground suffered any injuries," the airline said.

The incident caused several delays and cancellations from Luxembourg Airport. Luxair flights LG5554 from Oslo, LG9514 from Hamburg and LG6996 from Milan had to be diverted to Liège airport, while several commercial flights also had to be cancelled, the airline said.
