The Free University of Brussels (ULB) held a ceremony Monday morning at the Erasmus campus in honor of Dr. Denis Mukwege, lecturer at the University and co-winner of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize with Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. His name is given to Building J’s auditorium in which he regularly gives lectures and conferences.
The gynecologist Denis Mukwege works on the genital mutilation of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Speeches paying tribute to his commitment were given by Alain Carpentier, Director of the Health Division, Yvon Englert, President, and Joanne Rasschaert, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. For ULB wished to honor the one who, daily risking his life, rebuilds, "repairs" women and children, whose bodies were mutilated by rebel groups. His work has succeeded in bringing the seriousness of the situation to light worldwide.
The decision to name a University auditorium after Denis Mukwege is part of ULB’s wider policy on the issue of diversity, which aims at giving the name of outstanding personalities to auditoriums. The ceremony ended with the unveiling of the auditorium’s plaque.
