Dynamic speed limit display panels overlooking some highways and rings are not as efficient as they should be, Touring estimated. According to the traffic mobility organisation, the imposed limit often does not correspond to the road type, and drivers therefore just ignore it.
Touring conducted surveys on the Antwerp ring road, the E313, the E40 in Ghent, and the E17 and E19 in Antwerp. The organisation found that 50 km/h was sometimes displayed when there was no queue or incident nearby.
Out of 1,500 vehicles controlled, 70% did not respect the posted limit. This is not only a security risk. We also miss the opportunity to better control the traffic flow during peak hours, according to Touring.
Touring asks the relevant departments to take the appropriate steps to assess the impact of dynamic traffic management on queues or traffic safety. The organisation also requests that the speed displayed on the panel be briefly justified, particularly by showing whether it is a question of road safety or one of fluidity.
