The Hungarian government has launched an anti-migration campaign on billboards and newspaper advertisements ahead of the European Parliament elections in May. This time the Commission decided to react and issued a point by point fact sheet against the Hungarian claims.
At its meeting this week (27 February) the College of Commissioners, including the Hungarian one, decided by consensus to issue a response against the policies and “fake news” of a Member State.
The Hungarian campaign to its citizens is entitled: “You too have the right to know what Brussels is planning.” The Commission agrees but “citizens should deserve to know the truth about what the EU is doing.”
The Hungarian government campaign distorts the truth and seeks to paint a dark picture of a secret plot to drive more migration to Europe, the Commission says. The new billboards feature pictures of Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and Hungarian-American financier and philanthropist George Soros. Last time it was only Soros in a campaign with anti-Semitic undertones.
