A fire broke out at dawn on Tuesday in a hotel on Emmanuel Mounier in the Brussels municipality of Woulwe-Saint-Lambert, the Brussels Fire Brigade announced.

The blaze meant that some 80 hotel guests had to be evacuated, but no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

The fire started at around 04:30. Firefighters believe that the origin of the fire was a flower planter on the terrace of a room on the fourth floor.

“The flames had reached the roof through the façade and had spread to the insulation of the roof,” explained Walter Derieux, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade. “We had to dismantle part of the roof to put out the fire and avoid any resumption.”

The 80 hotel guests were evacuated from their rooms and brought to the restaurant of the hotel. An emergency medical response was organised, but quickly cancelled, Derieux said.

The fire brigade said that a possible cause of the fire could have been the spontaneous combustion of peat used in the planters on the terrace. As a precautionary measure, they have now been removed.
