Brussels public transport operator STIB is planning to introduce digital tickets – a "quicker and easier" payment method which would allow people to buy directly via the app.
STIB is looking to introduce the new ticketing system in the coming months, but it first wants to test the method among its travellers, it announced on Wednesday.
"Efficient payment solutions are also an important service for travellers," said STIB CEO Brieuc de Meeûs.
"The bank card payment system, initially launched for tourists, is now used by many travellers. The digital ticket that can be used with several transport companies further expands the range of fast, user-friendly tickets," he added.
The completely paperless ticket will soon be available in the STIB app and complements the MOBIB card, contactless payment with a bank card or smartwatch/phone, and paper tickets. People will be able to purchase the tickets online and validate them directly in the app.
Once activated, the digital ticket is valid for 60 minutes with no limit on connections, just like a traditional ticket. When connecting to other lines (such as when taking the metro and tram in one hour, for example), travellers have to indicate their route in the app.
For entering and leaving stations, the app generates a QR code which will open the gates in the stations. "The entrance gates in stations are currently being equipped with a new reader which scans QR codes generated by the app," STIB noted. Stickers will be placed on the sides so that travellers can immediately see where to scan their QR code.
Subject to tests
STIB is now looking for 500 volunteers to test this new system. "Everyone travelling in Brussels with a Brupass and Brupass XL 1 and/or 10 rides is asked to take part in the test. Applications are now open," the company noted in a statement.
Eventually, travellers will be able to buy Brupass and Brupass XL tickets for 1 and 10 journeys directly in the STIB app for the same price with just an account.
Interested parties can sign up via a form on the STIB website, while STIB will also be launching a campaign to attract volunteers via social media and the STIB newsletter. If chosen, they will have to download the STIB app and log in to a STIB account linked to the e-mail address provided on the form.
The aim is for testers to use the digital ticket as much as possible and report any problems or suggestions to STIB. During the testing phase, they will also be given short questionnaires to help the company improve the digital ticket.
