Overnight stays in Belgium have rebounded since the blow to the sector dealt by the Covid-19 pandemic. Most recent annual figures show that 2022 performance in this sector was 1% better than in 2019.

Nearly every Belgian province registered an increase in the number of bookings compared to 2019, with the Flemish Brabant being the only exception. However, there were more bookings in general compared to 2021. The high number of bookings is largely thanks to Belgian nationals.

The Brussels-Capital Region saw the greatest increase, with 162% more overnight stays compared to 2021. However, when compared with 2019 figures, there were 16% fewer bookings. On the other hand, Flanders and Wallonia saw a 6% and 4% increase from 2019 respectively.

While hotels and holiday parks still recorded fewer bookings than before Covid-19, holiday homes, campsites and guest rooms all saw an increase in bookings – at 13%, 8% and 3% respectively.

The number of non-Belgian residents who booked overnight stays has not yet reached its pre-pandemic height. Belgians, however, have taken the redemption of the tourism sector into their own hands with domestic tourists accounting for 55% of overnight stays.
