Walloon aerospace group Sonaca announced on Monday that it had signed “the largest contract in its history” with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus at the Paris-Le Bourget International Air Show (SIAE), in the form of three different contracts.

“Sonaca now becomes the official supplier of trailing edge flaps for the Airbus A321XLR and extends its long-standing contract to supply leading edges for A320 and A350 aircraft. For the Sonaca Group, this is a major step forward in its product diversification strategy. These contracts represent the most important commercial success ever signed for Sonaca,” the company said in a press release.

This contract for the A321 XLR, the new Airbus long-range single-aisle aircraft, is a sign of the Belgian manufacturer’s expansion. Sonaca will rely on its three of its major production sites: Belgium, Brazil and Romania to supply components. This new mission will involve no fewer than 160 people within Sonaca’s teams.

In addition, Sonaca has been confirmed as the leading edge supplier for the successful A320 and A350 programmes. “This is testament to the renewed confidence in one of our flagship components and confirms Sonaca’s industrial robustness and competitiveness”, emphasises the press release, which gives no indication of the potential turnover linked to these three contracts.

Sonaca describes itself as a “Belgian industrial flagship”. It will have the opportunity to develop new technologies with the installation of a mechanical machining machine for large parts.
