One in five workers is not attentive enough in the workplace, increasing the risk of workplace accidents. Whether due to fatigue, stress or routine, workplace accidents have become more frequent in recent years.

An average of 403 workplace accidents were reported every working day to the Federal Agency for Occupational Risk (Fedris) in 2021. A survey by Ascento HR and services provider shows that the number of incidents in the workplace, as well as on the way to and from work, has been rising since 2015.

"Our CogniReact tests are scientifically based and give companies an insight into their staff's perception, reaction speed and alertness," said Ascento director Ann Sterckx. "They can then take targeted action to address workplace accidents preventively. It is important to raise awareness and encourage safe behaviour."

Breaking routines

The CogniReact tool is a console that measures employees' reaction speed and alertness through eye-hand (foot) coordination tests. The console consists of a joystick, various coloured buttons and pedals. It has long been used by IPMT (Institute for Psychomedical Testing) to assess driving fitness in traffic during remedial examinations.

Sterckx stressed that this is important in sectors such as logistics, where people drive forklifts, trucks or other heavy transport. But it is equally valuable for all companies striving for a safe working environment and zero workplace accidents.

Over the past seven months, 338 employees from 12 different sectors took the test. For many, the results were a wake-up call: 17.75% did not give an alert impression, and 18.34% scored poorly on perception.

A targeted plan can help eliminate a major cause of workplace accidents, Ascento explained. Routine, for example, weighs heavily on alertness. Employees are also called on to be vigilant on safely precautions and companies are advised to reassess their procedures.

Sometimes small interventions, such as putting a mirror in the changing room, are already a good step towards a safer working environment.
