Convicted murderer Adrien Rompen was detained and arrested in Spain on Monday by Spanish authorities, RTL Info reports.
The former firefighter, who was convicted in 2017 for the murder of his wife, has been on the run from authorities since the beginning of June. "The excellent work of the police services in charge of the case made it possible to locate the person concerned," the Verviers Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday.
Rompen should have returned to the Marche-en-Famenne prison on 9 June after a short authorised leave. He failed to show up and has been actively pursued by members of the Federal Judicial Police ever since.
According to the prosecution, police are expediting the extradition process so that the former firefighter can "return to a Belgian prison establishment as quickly as possible."
In 2015, Rompen strangled and beat his wife to death. He has, however, consistently denied this. The suspect's escape is said to have caused stress for the murderer's children, who had been placed into the custody of their maternal grandmother.
