Google will invest another 600 million euros in Belgium, with the construction of a new data centre on its site in Saint-Ghislain, the American giant announced on Monday.
The construction of this fourth data centre will bring the total investment in Belgium to 1.6 billion euros.
It was in Saint-Ghislain that the first Google European data centre was opened in 2009.
In 2018, Google announced the construction of a third data centre, which will be operational by the end of the year, and a new solar power plant on the site of Saint-Ghislain. The fourth data centre should be ready by 2021, according to Google.
The first data centre (2009) was the first worldwide to run entirely without refrigeration, using an evaporative cooling system. It draws wastewater from the nearby industrial canal site and thus reduces the overall energy consumption.
