Belgium's former King Albert II (89) will remain in hospital until at least early next week after he having been admitted with dehydration symptoms on Tuesday, the Royal Palace announced on Wednesday.

Albert is quietly taking his time to recover, but everything is moving in the right direction, a spokesperson told Belga News Agency.

King Albert and Queen Paola are currently staying at Castle Belvédère in Laeken, their official residence. From there, King Albert was transferred to hospital on Tuesday morning as a precaution when he showed signs of dehydration.

King Albert was the sixth king of Belgium, from 9 August 1993 until 21 July 2013, when he abdicated so his eldest son Philippe could take over.

Over the past few years, Albert has been struggling with his health on several occasions: he has been suffering from heart problems and had to have a skin tumour removed from his head in 2014.
