The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) has extended code yellow in Liège and all Flemish provinces, except Flemish Brabant, until 21:00 on Wednesday.

The code yellow warning has been in force since 23:00 on Tuesday evening. The emergency number 1722 was also activated due to the risk of storms and flooding. The RMI warned of winds up to 70 km/hour.

The purpose of the 1722 e-counter and emergency number is to avoid overloading the 112 emergency centres so that those in mortal danger will not be kept waiting. It is advised to only call the emergency number 112 in potentially life-threatening circumstances.

Code red is also in force in some parts of the Netherlands due to the passage of Storm Poly. This concerns the provinces of North Holland, Flevoland and Friesland and the IJsselmeer region.

Hundreds of flights and trains have been cancelled due to the severe weather warning. Dutch weather website Weerplaza has described Storm Poly as "the strongest summer storm ever measured" in the country.
