A man was shot in the Brussels commune of Schaerbeek on Monday evening. He was taken to hospital but is no longer in mortal danger.

One person was shot near Schaerbeek's Chazal Eisenhower roundabout on Monday night, Bruzz reported. The news has since been confirmed by the local police in Brussels North (Schaarbeek/Evere/Sint-Joost-ten-Node).

"Our teams intervened on Monday evening at around 22:25 on Avenue Chazalle in Schaerbeek after shots were reported,” the police said. "At the scene, officers administered first aid to an injured person, while waiting for emergency services to arrive."

Two people were seen fighting in Schaerbeek on Monday night, of whom at least one was carrying a weapon. The pair started running away from the scene where they were originally seen, after which a shot was fired. Local residents saw that one injured person was left behind and tried to stem the bleeding.

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition but his life was no longer at risk as of Tuesday morning.

The cause and exact circumstances of the events are still unclear. The police set up a perimeter to carry out an investigation, which resulted in traffic jams around the area and near the Josaphat Park area in the early morning. The roundabout was cleared at 10:30 allowing traffic to pass through again.

A perimeter remained in place in Rue Auguste Lambiotte at the café 'Amnesia Bar' as the gunman reportedly moved to this location after the shooting.
