The Belgian-born Congolese international footballer Théo Bongonda has decided to continue his career in Russia and has signed a new deal with Spartak Moscow, the club from the Russian capital announced on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old winger, who also played for the Belgian international youth team, leaves Spanish club Cadiz after just one season, where he was transferred from Racing Genk last August. He did not really shine in La Liga, ending his season with 4 goals and 3 assists in 32 appearances. Cadiz nevertheless enjoyed a quiet season, finishing 14th out of 20.
After starting out at Zulte Waregem, Bongonda moved to Spain and Celta Vigo in January 2015 before joining Trabzonspor in Turkey on loan from July 2017 to January 2018. He spent another six months on loan at Zulte Waregem, who transferred him in July 2018 before selling him a year later to Genk.
Spartak Moscow finished third in the Russian league but are banned from European competition like all Russian clubs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Bongonda is set to be reunited with Dutch player Quincy Promes and Jamaican Shamar Nicholson (ex-Charleroi) at Spartak. However, he will not cross paths with Maximiliano Caufriez, who has been with Spartak since the summer of 2021. The former Saint-Trond defender has been transferred to Clermont, where Spartak loaned him out last season.
