Austria became the first EU country to slap a total ban on the controversial weed-killer glyphosate, after a majority of MPs voted on Tuesday in favour of the ban in the name of the "precautionary principle."
The ban, judged by its opponents to be against European law, notably received the support of extreme-right party FPÖ.
The weed-killer, produced by chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer, has faced a range of trials in the United States, accused there of being carcinogenic.
