Around 500,000 people watched the time trial stage of this year’s Tour de France in Brussels on Sunday afternoon.
They were also there to join in the festivities organised around the event. The Brussels-Ixelles police said they were expecting around 500,000 people.
The public turned out en masse to enjoy the festivities in Fan Park as well as watch the team time trial stage, which started at the Place des Palais and finished at the Atomium.
This year’s Tour de France started in Brussels as a tribute to Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx.
The first stage of the Tour, which took place on Saturday, started in the centre of Brussels and ended in front of the Château Royal in Laeken.
The second stage, a time trial, took place on Sunday afternoon and went through the centre of town.
