The Flemish economy will continue to grow more strongly than that of Brussels and Wallonia and is forecast to overtake the other two regions in the coming years, according to the Federal Planning Bureau and regional statistics offices.

The Flemish economy was hit less hard than those of Wallonia and Brussels by the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent energy crisis, and it is expected that it will weather external shocks in the coming years.

The economic outlook prepared by the Federal Planning Bureau, Statistics Flanders, the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis, and the Walloon Institute of Evaluation, Prospective and Statistics forecasts growth for Flanders at an average of 1.6% a year from 2024 to 2028.

Average growth in Wallonia and Brussels is set to amount to 1.3% and 1.1%, respectively for that period. This year too, Flemish economic growth (1.4%) is set to be higher than that of Wallonia (0.9%) and Brussels (1.3%).

The higher growth in Flanders is attributed to a higher contribution from market services and more growth in the industrial sector.
