The Brussels-Capital Region Government has decided to grant free public transport for 20,000 employees in the non-profit sector, Brussels Secretary of State for Economic Transition, Barbara Trachte, announced on Wednesday.

The measure is the result of an agreement signed with the non-profit sector in 2021, for the period 2021-2024, which set aside €57 million towards helping workers in the sector, as well as to support the Belgian capital’s economic transition, Trachte said in a press release.

The measure will allow around 20,000 workers to be reimbursed 100% for their trips on the STIB network. The new reductions will begin from the start of the next school year in August.

The free transport arrangement is expected to cost the region €5.5 million, including €4.41 million injected by the public authorities into STIB, in addition to measures already subsidised by the region.
