Heavy traffic jams expected across European roads on Saturday

Saturday is a red day on European roads for people driving to their holiday destinations.

Motorists will have to be patient from 08:00 to 16:00, with a peak in traffic jams expected around midday, the Belgian motorist assistance company Touring said on Saturday morning.

In the early hours of the morning, traffic was already very heavy in France, even if it remained fluid. Around 100km of traffic jams were counted – half of which was on the A7 linking Lyon and Orange in the Rhone Valley.

An hour’s wait in the Mont Blanc tunnel towards Italy was also recorded on Saturday morning. Traffic was heavy in southern Germany, with five kilometres of traffic jams on the A8 towards Salzburg.

In Austria, motorists were idling on the A13 Innsbruck-Brenner-Italy, the A10 Salzburg-Villach towards Slovenia before the Tauern tunnel and on the A11 Villach-Slovenia before the Karawanken tunnel, causing an hour’s delay on this stretch.

In Switzerland, a 15km traffic jam snaked along the A2 motorway in front of the north portal of the Gotthard tunnel, imposing 02:30 delays on this segment.

In the return direction, orange is the order of the day in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, with a red peak expected around 15:00. Green light on the other hand in France and Spain, where traffic should remain fluid.
