Young Italian cyclist Jacopo Venzo, 17, died after crashing on Friday during the 48th edition of the Rundfahrt Juniors bicycle race in Austria.

The announcement was made on Saturday by his team, Campana Imballagi-Geo & Tex-Trentino. The stage race has been cancelled.

Venzo fell on the descent of the Mistelbacher Berg. “Deeply shocked, we have to announce that the young Italian athlete who fell yesterday has succumbed to his injuries despite the best efforts of the doctors,” the organisation said on Facebook on Saturday. “Our thoughts go out to his loved ones, companions and colleagues.”

“It is with tears in our eyes and a broken heart that we announce that our junior team member Jacopo Venzo has left us,” said the young Italian’s team.

“Jacopo was an extraordinary boy, with a future still to be written in sport and above all in life. That’s why this hurts even more. As a team, we are united around the family, friends and all those who loved Jacopo at this time of immense sorrow. Ciao Jacopo, thank you for the good times we had together. You can’t imagine how much we’ll miss you."
