Two people were killed and six others were injured in the partial collapse of a bridge on Sunday in Patras, western Greece, according to Greek police and local media.
Initially, Greek authorities confirmed one person killed, and four injured, but on Sunday evening the toll had risen to two deaths and six injuries.
The ANA news agency and public broadcaster ERT, citing the ambulance service, counted four injured, who have been transferred to two hospitals in the city.
A large-scale rescue operation is underway, with firefighters and ambulances on the scene.
The reasons for the collapse are not known at this stage. The bridge is located on the road linking the port of Patras, on the southwestern Peloponnese peninsula, to Athens.
However, according to Efthymis Lekkas, the president of the Earthquake Protection Organisation OASP, quoted by ERT, the infrastructure had stability problems, which were known to the authorities.
This restoration work began in 2021 at a cost of more than six million euros, according to ERT.
