The Kennedy Tunnel on the Antwerp ring road (R1) will be closed in both directions for maintenance work during the nights of 5-6 and 12-13 August, the Flemish Road and Traffic Agency (AWV) said on Wednesday.
The works are necessary to remedy certain defects in the high-voltage installation. A temporary repair had been carried out last November but it did not prove sufficient.
The tunnel will not be closed before midnight to limit traffic inconvenience and will be reopened at 07:00.

The AWV and the Flemish Traffic Centre stress that it is exceptional for the tunnel to be closed in both directions and recommend that drivers map their routes in advance.
The closure of the tunnel will also require the closure of some other nearby road connections.
