The European motorways to the south of the continent are already very busy on Saturday morning, announced mobility organisation Touring, which is warning of a "red day" with extremely difficult traffic and monster traffic jams.

A total of over 1,000 km of traffic jams has already been recorded in France; on the A7 motorway in the Rhône valley alone, there is a 4-hour wait due to the traffic jams southbound. On the A10 motorway between Paris and Bordeaux, the first delays are also popping up outside Paris and in the Bordeaux area.

Southern Germany is already very busy as well: on the A8 motorway Munich - Salzburg, there is a 45 km traffic jam before the border crossing at Salzburg.

In Switzerland, there is a 10 km traffic jam before the Gotthard Tunnel in the direction of Italy. In Austria, there is another traffic jam at the Karawank Tunnel towards Slovenia. There are also delays on the A10 motorway Salzburg - Villach to Slovenia and on the A13 (Brenner motorway) to Italy.

Touring expects the peak for southbound traffic disruption to occur around midday.

Additionally, it also warns of heavy traffic in the northern direction: a 'red day' applies to that direction of travel as well, with a traffic peak expected around 15:00.
