A new ordinance restricts drinking hours in public places for a temporary period in Saint Josse, the major of the Brussels municipality confirmed to Belgian media.

In place since July 19, the measure bans the consumption of alcohol in some public areas from 22:00 to 9:00 AM, according to La Dernière Heure.

The ordinance will be put in place in the neighbourhoods and areas enclosed by the Rue de Brabant, d’Aerschot, Verte, Prairie, Linné et de la Rivière, according to BX1.

The regulations will remain in place until October 31, and they exclude terraces of pubs or drinking establishments in the area.

The measure is part of a wider effort to clamp down on noise, security, cleanliness or drug-related nuisances.

On Tuesday, the area was rocked by a street fight which saw police deploy extensive means, including a helicopter, to track down a man who witnesses say was carrying a firearm.
